The Stray Dog Cafe, Petrograd, where Futurists is set, was home in the early 20th century to Russia’s greatest artists and visionaries. Mayakovsky’s poetry was galvanised by the 1917 revolution but other poets like Mandelstam and Akhmatova struggled to find their place in the new order. While civil war raged, the course of the revolution was reflected in their heart-breaking destinies. As Mandelstam prophesied, “Only in Russia is poetry respected, it gets people killed”.
